Died December 20, 1965. Mainz, Germany. Anthropologist. Professor of Anthropology at the University of Breslau and the University of Mainz. Conducted anthropological surveys in India, China, Indochina, and other places. In 1933, he published Rassenkunde und Rassengeschichte der Menschheit (Ethnology and History of the Races), in which he divided humanity into three major racial groups based on skin color: white, black, and yellow, and placed 36 races under them based on region. He further divided these races into main races, subraces, special types, and intermediate types, completing a well-organized classification table. Although it is somewhat overly systematic, it is still used as the most comprehensive classification table of humanity.

ドイツの人類学者。ブレスラウ大学人類学教授，マインツ大学人類学教授を歴任。インド，中国，インドシナなどの人類学的調査を行なった。 1933年に『人種学および人種史』 Rassenkunde und Rassengeschichte der Menschheitを著わし，そのなかで人類を皮膚の色によって白，黒，黄色の三大人種系株に分け，地域別にその下に 36の人種をおいた。さらにこれらの人種を主人種，副人種，特殊型，中間型に分け，整然たる分類表を完成した。系統的すぎるきらいはあるが，最もよくまとまった人類分類表として使用されている。
