It is an annual grass of the family Poaceae (APG classification: Poaceae). It is native to Africa and was first discovered in the Sudan region, hence the name. It is a species closely related to sorghum, grows to a height of 2 meters, and grows into a clump-like shape with many branches from the ground. The leaf blade is 30-50 cm long and 1-3 cm wide. In early autumn, it produces panicles with sparse ears at the end of the stem. The seeds are 3-4 mm long and elliptical, and are wrapped in shiny glumes that are pale yellow to pale purple. It is cultivated for its foliage as feed, and is mainly used as hay and silage (buried feed). When using green cutting, the young foliage may contain hydrocyanic acid, so it should be dried before feeding. It was introduced to the United States in the early 20th century, where the variety was improved, and introduced to Japan after World War II. It is popular as a pasture grass for warm climates, and has become naturalized in vacant lots in the Kanto region and west.
