It is a contrasting concept to new styles such as monody that emerged at the end of the 16th century, and it is seen as an earlier style, and there are also examples where it means a rich sound or full concerto that is not limited to unaccompanied music but also includes instruments, and it is a 19th century concept that idealizes the sound of pure vocal music.
