A book that records the history of the three Korean kingdoms of Silla, Goguryeo, and Baekje. It is the oldest surviving history book in Korea and a basic source for research into ancient times. It was compiled by 10 historians, led by Kim Bu-sik, under the orders of Emperor Injong of Goryeo. It was presented in 1145. It is thought to have been supplemented by an earlier "History of the Three Kingdoms" that has not been handed down to the present day. Kim Bu-sik was of Silla descent and is said to have compiled the work from a Silla-centered historical perspective, but the Annals treats the three kingdoms on an equal footing. The Annals consists of 12 volumes for Silla, 10 for Goguryeo, and 6 for Baekje, and it is not surprising that the volume for Silla is greater given the dates they existed. It also contains 3 volumes of a chronology, 9 volumes of geography and official records, and 10 volumes of biographies of Kim Yu-shin, Gaesomun, Gung Ye, and others, for a total of 50 volumes. The oldest complete edition is a woodblock print published in Gyeongju during the reign of King Jungjong of the Yi Dynasty (1506-1544), and facsimiles of this woodblock print are widely available.
