Professional baseball player (pitcher: right-handed batter and thrower). Born on May 1 in the Urals in Imperial Russia. He came to Japan with his parents at the age of three, fleeing the Russian Revolution. In the fall of 1934 (Showa 9), while in his third year at Asahikawa Junior High School in Hokkaido, an American Major League Baseball All-Star team came to Japan and he was selected to pitch for the All-Japan team. Later, the All-Japan team became the Tokyo Giants (now the Yomiuri Giants), and he became a Giants player. He began playing as a pitcher in 1936. After pitcher Eiji Sawamura was drafted (1938), he became the Giants' ace and was named Most Valuable Player (now the MVP) in both 1939 and 1940. After World War II, he played for six teams, and in 1955 he became the first pitcher to win 300 games. He retired the same year. He died in a car accident in January 1957. During the war, he was forced to change his name to Hiroshi Suda. The 1939 record of 42 wins in a season was tied by Nishitetsu pitcher Kazuhisa Inao in 1961, but his career shutout record of 83 is a professional baseball record (as of 2015). In 1984, Asahikawa City opened a renovated municipal baseball stadium as Asahikawa Stadium. [Junji Kanda and Hiroshi Morioka, September 16, 2016] During his 19 years as a player, his total stats were 586 games pitched, 4,175 and a third innings pitched, 303 wins and 176 losses, an ERA of 2.09, 1,960 strikeouts, 350 complete games, and 83 shutouts. His main titles include most wins six times, best winning percentage twice, best ERA once, most strikeouts twice, Most Valuable Player (now MVP) twice, and Best Nine once. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame (Baseball Hall of Fame Museum) in 1960 (Showa 35).
