Arab general who conquered Iraq around ?-670. A member of the Zuhrāh family of the Quraysh tribe. A follower of Muhammad since Mecca. Appointed commander of the army to conquer Iraq by the second caliph, Umar I, he defeated the Sassanid army at the Battle of al-Qādisiya on the middle Euphrates River and then captured the capital, Ctesiphon. He founded the military city of Kufa in southern Iraq and became its first governor (emir).
