Sa'd b.Abī Waqqās
Arab general who conquered Iraq around ?-670. A member of the Zuhrāh family of the Quraysh tribe. A follower of Muhammad since Mecca. Appointed commander of the army to conquer Iraq by the second caliph, Umar I, he defeated the Sassanid army at the Battle of al-Qādisiya on the middle Euphrates River and then captured the capital, Ctesiphon. He founded the military city of Kufa in southern Iraq and became its first governor (emir). He was appointed to the Council of Six Elders to select the third caliph, but subsequently retired from politics.

イラクを征服したアラブ軍の将。クライシュ族ズフラ家の人。ムハンマドのメッカ時代からの信徒。第2代カリフのウマル1世によりイラク征服軍の指揮者に任命され,ユーフラテス川中流のカーディシーヤal‐Qādisīyaの戦でササン朝軍を撃破し,続いて首都クテシフォンを陥れた。南イラクに軍営都市クーファを建設し,その駐屯軍の初代総督(アミール)となった。第3代カリフ選出のための6人の長老会議のメンバーに指名されたが,その後は政界から引退した。
