Hayy b. Yaqẓān (English spelling)

…He served as the court physician to the Almohad caliph Abu Yaqub Yusuf for many years, and retired in 1182, handing over his position to Ibn Rushd. He left behind a number of medical texts, but is especially known as the author of the philosophical novel Hayy b. Yaqẓān (meaning "the living one, the son of the enlightened one"). It tells the story of an old man who has achieved philosophical wisdom through his own intellectual endeavours on an isolated island in the middle of the ocean, and a young man who has escaped from another island, disgusted by the ignorant masses' contentment with traditional and conventional religions, who visit the island to preach the truth to the ignorant masses, but discord and quarrels arise over the teachings of the two men, and the two return to the isolated island in despair. …
