A town in central Yemen, 100 km south-southeast of the capital Sana'a. It lies in a 19 km wide valley between two volcanoes, each reaching an elevation of 2,400 m in the Yemeni highlands. Myth has it that many ruins date back to biblical times, but the first reliable historical records date back to the 12th century and describe beautiful buildings and fertile land. For a long time it was the centre of the Zaydi sect of Islam and the site of a famous seminary. The town is divided into two parts by an irrigated vegetable patch. It is a distribution centre for agricultural products and is known for producing quality horses, an important product of which still remains today. Population 39,195 (1980).DamarPlease see the "Dammar" page. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
