Tiger shrimp (Penaeus semisulcatus)

Japanese: クマエビ(熊蝦) - クマエビ（英語表記）Penaeus semisulcatus

A shrimp of the family Penaeidae of the Crustacea class, it is an important fishery resource. It inhabits warm seas and coasts, and can reach a body length of 22 cm. Its body is reddish brown with a purplish tint, and it is often called ashiaka because its thoracic and abdominal legs are red. The whip-like part of the second antenna has many red horizontal bands. It is caught in muddy areas less than 20 m deep, and is caught together with red shrimp and kuruma shrimp, but not in large numbers. In terms of quality, it is considered to be the second most expensive product after kuruma shrimp. The spawning season is from mid-June to early September, and shrimp with a cephalothorax length of 5 mm to 1 cm can be found in the eelgrass beds of the bay from August to September.

甲殻綱クルマエビ科のエビで，水産資源として重要である。暖海性，沿岸性で，体長22cmに達する。体は紫色を帯びた赤褐色で，胸脚と腹肢が赤いためアシアカと呼ばれることも多い。第2触角の鞭状部には多数の赤色横帯がある。水深20m以浅の泥底が漁場で，アカエビやクルマエビと混獲されるが，あまり多くない。品質的にはクルマエビに次ぐ高級品とされる。産卵期は6月中旬から9月上旬で，頭胸甲長5mm～1cmのものが8～9月の湾内のアマモ場に見られる。
