A novel by the Swedish author Lagerlöf. It was the winner of a magazine contest and became her breakthrough work. Published in 1891. The protagonist is a pastor named Gösta Berling, who was expelled from the church for being a heavy drinker, and the novel is based on legends and folk tales from the author's hometown of Värmland. The story revolves around the theme of the leisure elements of society awakening to a life of work and service, but her poetic writing does not make it moralistic. Mori Ogai's translation of The Pastor (1925) is a complete translation of the first chapter of this work. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
