A passerine bird of the Weaverbird family (illustration). It is slightly larger than a sparrow, with a total length of about 16 cm. Males resemble sparrows, but have a gray head and a black spot on their throat that is larger than that of sparrows and extends to the upper chest. Females are yellowish brown all over, and do not have the black spot on their throat. They were originally distributed from southern Europe and the Mediterranean region to the steppes of Central Asia, but as they became associated with human farming, they spread throughout Western Europe, and in the 19th century to Eastern Europe. They currently live as far east as the Amur region. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
