Stanford Research Institute's lifestyle analysis categorizes consumers according to psychological and sociological theories in order to predict consumer behavior in the purchasing decision process. The typology is broadly divided into four groups: (1) Need-Dorians, (2) Outer Directed, (3) Inner Directed, and (4) Integrated. (1) is further divided into Survivors and Sustainers, (2) Belongers, Emulators, and Achievers, and (3) I Am Me, Experience, and Society. In more detail, the analysis reports on the characteristics of each lifestyle, dividing them into nine typologies. NTT Data Communications Corporation purchased the rights to this typology, adapted it to a Japanese style, and is offering it as Japan-VALS.
