Yamato [village] - Daiwa
A village in Ochi County in central Shimane Prefecture. Population 2,175 (1995). A mountain village on the border with Hiroshima Prefecture, located in the middle reaches of the Gono River, which flows north through the center of the village, most of the village area is forest. Iron sand production was thriving until the mid-Meiji period, and Tsuga Hongo and Tsugayuki flourished as river ports for boat traffic on the Gono River. Currently, there is a joint silkworm breeding center and a flower bulb center, and tulip bulb cultivation is thriving. Shiitake mushrooms, wasabi, and strawberries are also grown. The San'in Line and National Route 375 run along the Gono River, and there are Ushio Onsen and Uokiri Onsen.

Yamato [Village]

A village in Makabe County, western Ibaraki Prefecture. Population 7,764 (1995). It is located at the western foot of the northern part of the Tsukuba Mountains, and Sakuragawa River flows south through the center, flowing into Lake Kasumigaura. JR Mito Line runs through the area. In the early modern period, cotton cultivation was popular, and it was a center of cotton production. In the Meiji period, stone industry using granite quarried from the Tsukuba Mountains became popular, and the area is still known as a producer of granite gravestones, lanterns, building materials, etc. Rakuhoji Temple (Amabiki Kannon) of the Shingon sect at the foot of Mt. Amabiki is the 24th temple of the Thirty-Three Temples of Bando, and is known as the Kannon that grants longevity and child-rearing. The temple grounds are famous for cherry blossoms.

Yamato [Village]

A village in Higashiyamanashi County, central Yamanashi Prefecture. Population 1962 (1995). Located at the easternmost tip of the Kofu Basin, the Nittsu River, which originates at Mt. Daibosatsu and flows into the Fuefuki River, flows west through the center of the village. Located at the western foot of Sasago Pass, known as a difficult place to travel, the village once flourished as a post town on the Koshu Highway called Tsuruse, but after the opening of the Chuo Main Line (1903), the area around Hajikano Station became the center of the village. Most of the village area is forest, and agriculture and forestry have been the main industries, but in recent years, grapes and other fruit trees and shiitake mushroom cultivation linked to tourism have become popular, and many visitors come to the village using National Route 20 and the Chuo Expressway.

A village in Oshima District, facing the East China Sea, in central Amami Oshima, Kagoshima Prefecture. Population 2,092 (1995). A series of steep mountains, with Yuwandake (694m) as its highest peak, run up to the coast. The coast is a complex ria coast with little flat land, and a coral reef has developed in front of it. The 11 settlements scattered along the coastline are located on small flat areas at the inner bay, with very little arable land, and many of the farmers are small-scale part-time farmers. Taking advantage of the subtropical climate, plums, ponkan, tankan, vegetables, tea, and other crops are cultivated. Fishing is mainly done by line-fishing for scallops, chibiki, and sea bream, and aquaculture of mozuku seaweed and aosa is also growing.

島根県中央部,邑智郡の村。人口2175(1995)。村の中央を北流する江の川の中流域に位置する広島県境の山村で,村域の大部分が山林である。明治中期まで砂鉄の生産が盛んで,都賀本郷,都賀行(つがゆき)は江の川舟運の河港として栄えた。現在は稚蚕共同飼育センター,花卉球根センターが設けられ,チューリップの球根栽培が盛んであり,シイタケ,ワサビ,イチゴも栽培される。江の川に沿って三江線,国道375号線が通じ,潮温泉,魚切温泉がある。

やまと【大和[村]】

茨城県西部,真壁郡の村。人口7764(1995)。筑波山地北部の西麓にあり,中央を霞ヶ浦に注ぐ桜川が南流する。JR水戸線が通じる。近世にはワタの栽培が盛んで,木綿生産の中心地であった。明治期には筑波山地から採掘される花コウ岩を利用した石材業が盛んになり,現在も花コウ岩の墓石,灯籠,建材などの産地として知られる。雨引(あまびき)山麓の真言宗楽法寺(雨引観音)は坂東三十三所24番札所で,延命,子育ての観音として知られ,寺域は桜の名所である。

やまと【大和[村]】

山梨県中部,東山梨郡の村。人口1962(1995)。甲府盆地の最東端に位置し,大菩薩嶺に発し笛吹川に注ぐ日(につ)川が村の中央部を西流する。交通の難所として知られた笹子峠の西麓にあり,かつては甲州道中の宿場の鶴瀬が栄えたが,中央本線開通(1903)後は初鹿野(はじかの)駅周辺が中心となった。村域のほとんどが山林で,農林業を主体としてきたが,近年は観光と結びついたブドウなどの果樹とシイタケの栽培が盛んで,国道20号線,中央自動車道を利用して訪れる客も多い。

やまと【大和[村]】

鹿児島県奄美大島中部,東シナ海側に臨む大島郡の村。人口2092(1995)。湯湾岳(694m)を主峰とする急峻な山々が連続し,海岸まで迫る。海岸は複雑なリアス式海岸で平地に乏しく,前面にはサンゴ礁が発達している。海岸線上に点在する11の集落は湾奥の小平地に立地し,耕地はきわめて狭く,零細規模の兼業農家が多い。亜熱帯気候を生かしたスモモ,ポンカン,タンカン,野菜,茶などの栽培が行われる。漁業はホタ,チビキ,タイなどの一本釣りを主とし,モズク,アオサなどの養殖業も伸びている。
