This is a reflex reaction in which the abdominal tap excites the somatic afferent nerves that control the skin and muscles of the abdominal skin and the afferent fibers in the visceral nerves that control the internal organs, and this information travels to the medulla oblongata, increasing the activity of the vagus nerve that controls the heart, thereby suppressing the heartbeat.
