Istanbul (English spelling)

Japanese: イスタンブル(英語表記)Istanbul
Istanbul (English spelling)
A Turkish city on the Bosphorus Strait, an outlet of the Black Sea. Founded as a Greek colony, it has been a key transportation point since ancient times and was called Byzantium, but was called Constantinople after Constantine I designated it as the capital of the Roman Empire. In the Middle Ages, it flourished as the capital of the Byzantine Empire and as a cultural center. After the Ottoman occupation in 1453, it was renamed Istanbul and became its capital and the center of Islamic culture. With the establishment of the Republic of Turkey in 1923 and the transfer of the capital to Ankara, it has been officially called Istanbul (Turkish for Muslim town. It has been called this internally since the Ottoman period). It has the Suleiman Mosque and Topkapi Palace (now the National Museum).
