Ohara

Ohara
This is the former area of the southern part of Isumi City, in the southeast of Chiba Prefecture. It is located on the Pacific coast. It was incorporated as a town in 1899. In 1955, it was established by merging the villages of Tokai and Higashi with parts of the villages of Fuse and Naniwa. In 2005, it was merged with Isumi Town and Misaki Town to form Isumi City. Sardine fishing has been carried out here since the Edo period, and port facilities are also in place. In recent years, coastal fishing for spiny lobsters, turban shells, and sea bream has become popular. With the opening of the Kihara Line (which was converted to the Isumi Railway in 1988) and the Boso Line (which was renamed the JR Sotobo Line in 1972), it developed into a transportation and commercial center. It is also known as a fishing spot and a swimming beach, and there are many private lodgings and summer rental houses. Nearby are the remains of Obama Castle and the historic site of Shirahatadai, where Minamoto no Yoritomo raised his army. The Fudo Hall of Daisho-ji Temple, also known as Namikiri Fudo, is a designated Important Cultural Property of Japan. The coastal area is part of the Minami-Boso Quasi-National Park.
