A hydrate of tin(IV) oxide, SnO2 . Its general composition is SnO2 x H2O . x is not a constant value, and it exhibits gel-like properties. The white precipitate that forms when a small amount of dilute acid is added to an aqueous solution of a stannate salt is called α-stannic acid. Its structure is unclear. α-stannic acid dissolves in alkali hydroxides and alkali carbonates. It has a high adsorptivity, and is good at adsorbing organic dyes and phosphoric acid. When left in solution or heated, it becomes crystalline and exhibits properties similar to tin(IV) oxide. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
