Malayan Union (English spelling)

…The Malay Peninsula and northwestern Borneo were British colonies before World War II, but their administration was complicated, with the Straits Settlements, the Federated Malay States, and the Unfederated States. After the war, Britain decided to unify these regions and grant them independence, and presented the Malayan Union proposal as the basic plan. This proposed to unite the nine Malay states excluding Singapore, as well as Penang and Malacca, and to give equal rights to residents regardless of their origin.
