Torao Suzuki

Japanese:
Torao Suzuki

A scholar of Chinese literature. Doctor of Literature. His pen name was Hyoken (poetry) and his other pen name was Yakubo (waka). He was born in Niigata Prefecture in 1878 and graduated from the Department of Chinese Literature at Tokyo Imperial University. He served as a professor at Tokyo Higher Normal School, then as an assistant professor at Kyoto Imperial University, and then as a professor. He was a member of the Academy of Japan, a Person of Cultural Merit, and was awarded the Order of Culture. He passed away in 1963 at the age of 84. His representative works include "History of Chinese Poetry" (A History of Chinese Poetry), a critical history that compiles poetry critiques from throughout history, and "Outline of Fu History" (A Study of Fu), a study of the history of fu, a form of Chinese poetry, both of which opened up new fields that had never been explored before. He was a fan of Du Fu and translated all of his poems. He also wrote many commentaries on his poetry and was famous as a Chinese poet, composing excellent Chinese poems himself. His works include "Hyoken Poetry Collection" and "Yakubo Taixiu Collection." As a scholar of Chinese literature, he devoted himself to the study of classical literature, breaking away from the tradition of comprehensive Sinology and making original contributions in establishing the specialized field of literature.
