Yanaihara Incident

This was an incident of ideological oppression against Yanaihara Tadao, professor at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Tokyo, which occurred in 1937, the year the Sino-Japanese War broke out. He published "The Ideal of the Nation," a vague criticism of Japanese militarism, in the September issue of Chuokoron, and the article was removed in its entirety by the authorities. In November of the same year, nationalistic professors in the Faculty of Economics, including Hijikata Shigemi and Tanabe Tadao, accused Yanaihara of being ideologically disturbing and strongly urged him to resign. In response, Professor Ouchi Hyoe and others attempted to persuade President Nagayo Matarō, claiming that this was part of the government's political pressure on the University of Tokyo, but due to pressure on the president from the Minister of Education, they were unsuccessful, and in December of the same year Yanaihara submitted his resignation and left the university.

1937年日中戦争勃発の年に起った東京大学経済学部教授矢内原忠雄に対する思想弾圧事件。彼は『中央公論』9月号に日本の軍国主義に対する婉曲な批判を内容とした『国家の理想』を発表，当局により全面削除処分となった。経済学部内の土方成美，田辺忠男ら国家主義的教授たちは，同年 11月矢内原を思想不穏者であると非難し，強く辞職を迫った。これに対し大内兵衛教授らは，東大に対する政府の政治的圧力の一環であるとして長与又郎総長の説得に乗出したが，文部大臣からの総長への圧力もあって成功せず，同年 12月矢内原は辞表を提出，大学を去った。
