Rome's first historian, active from the 3rd to 2nd centuries BC. Dates of birth and death unknown. A member of the senatorial class, he participated in the Second Punic War (218-201 BC), and after the Battle of Cannae, in which Rome suffered a major defeat, he was sent to the temple of Delphi as an envoy to seek the oracle of Apollo. His history of Rome, written in Greek prose, has only been handed down in fragments, but it begins with a description of the legendary hero Aeneas, passes through the First Punic War (264-241 BC), and extends to his own time.
