Pan-American Highway

Japanese: パン･アメリカン･ハイウェー（英語表記）Pan‐American Highway

An international highway that runs through the Americas. It starts in the north from Fairbanks, Alaska, passing through Canada, the United States, Mexico, Central America, and the rest of South America, before reaching Tierra del Fuego, the southernmost island of Argentina. Its total length is 208,933 km. Its construction was proposed at the 1923 Congress of the Americas as an alternative to the Pan-American Railway project conceived in the 1880s as a means of realizing Pan-Americanism, which aimed to unite North and Latin America culturally, politically, and economically.

南北アメリカ大陸を縦貫する国際道路。北はアラスカのフェアバンクスから，カナダ，アメリカ合衆国，メキシコ，中央アメリカを経由して南アメリカ各国を結び，アルゼンチン最南端のフエゴ島に至る。全長20万8933km。北アメリカとラテン･アメリカの文化的･政治的･経済的結合をめざすパン･アメリカ主義の実現手段として1880年代に構想されたパン･アメリカ鉄道計画に代わるものとして，1923年の米州会議でその建設が提案された。
