Harding, Warren Gamaliel
Born November 2, 1865 in Ohio, Corsica
[Died] August 2, 1923. San Francisco, California. American politician. 29th President (in office 1921-23). He entered politics through running a local newspaper, and became an Ohio State Senator in 1899, and a United States Senator in 1915. He advocated isolationism during World War I, and as a member of the Committee on Foreign Relations, he strongly opposed W. Wilson's peace plan. In the 1920 presidential election, he ran a "return to normalcy" campaign and won by a landslide. In August 1921, he concluded a separate peace with Germany, and in 1922, he concluded the Washington Naval Treaty with Britain, Japan, France, and Italy. In domestic affairs, he faced sharp public criticism for his policy of protecting big capital, scandals involving personnel compensation, and corruption among his cabinet members, and he died suddenly on a Western tour just before his administration collapsed.
