The archipelago consists of 10 relatively large islands and many smaller ones, divided into the Barravento (windward) Islands (Santo Antão, São Vicente, Santa Luzia, São Nicolau, Boa Vista, and Sal) and the Sotavento (leeward) Islands (Maio, Santiago, Fogo, and Brava).
