1498‐1574 Dutch painter. Born near Haarlem and died in the same city. He studied under the Romanist Van Scorel, and studied in Rome from 1532 to 1536, where he was strongly influenced by Michelangelo and classical ancient art. After returning home, his religious and mythological paintings are full of intense expressiveness, and show early Mannerist tendencies. He also played an important role as a sketch artist for religious and allegorical prints. [Tatsushi Takahashi] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
