A shrimp of the family Palaemonidae in the Crustacea that lives in lakes and slow-flowing rivers, but its second thoracic leg is not as long as that of the freshwater prawn (illustration). Body length is about 6 cm. In addition to being eaten as tsukudani, it is important as fishing bait and natural food for fish. It is colorless and transparent, with 3 to 4 black-brown stripes on the cephalothorax and 7 on the abdomen. The joints of the thoracic legs are orange-yellow. The rostrum is slightly shorter than that of the cephalothorax, is almost horizontal, and has 5 to 7 spines on the upper edge and 2 to 4 spines on the lower edge. It is distributed in the Kuril Islands, Sakhalin, throughout Japan, and Korea. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
