Modelled on the Chinese capital of Chang'an, Heijo-kyo, Nagaoka-kyo and Heian -kyo were all avenues that ran north to south through the centre of capital cities. They began at Suzakumon Gate in the centre of the south side of the Imperial Palace and reached Rajomon Gate at the southern end of the city, with the area east of this being called Sakyo and the area west of this being called Ukyo. In Heian-kyo, the avenue was 28 jō (approximately 84 metres) wide and willows were planted along the road. Senbon-dori in Kyoto City is roughly equivalent to this. Note that further east in Tokyo there is Higashi-Suzaku-oji, which is sometimes called Nishi-Suzaku-oji to distinguish it from it. Shujaku-oji. Suzaka. Suzaku.
