1831‐1914 An English royal English teacher invited from Singapore to Bangkok by King Mongkut of Thailand in 1862. He taught English to the princes until 1867, and is said to have had a major influence on Chulalongkorn's understanding of Western culture as a boy. Margaret Landon's novel Anna and the King of Siam (1945), based on his autobiography An English Tutor at the Court of Siam (1870), was adapted into the musical The King and I, which popularized a distorted image of Mongkut to the world.
