1783‐1847 Swedish poet and historian. Professor of history at Uppsala University (1817-46). As a poet, he published works praising the virtues of the old Goths, and as a historical work, he is known for his three-volume "History of the Swedish Nation" (1832-36). He also served as a member of parliament and took a conservative stance politically, but he sympathized with the new liberal trends of the late 1830s and was criticized for changing his stance. However, unlike his colleague Amadeus Atterbom (1790-1855), who remained staunchly conservative, he was an optimistic man who, in his later years, regained his once-diminished poetic ability and began to publish excellent short poems.
