A former town in Higashi Matsuura County in central Saga Prefecture. The Karatsu Line runs through it. The central settlement developed as a coal mining town in the Karatsu coalfields, but with the decline of the coal industry, light industry was attracted. The town produces mandarin oranges, rice, tea, and highland vegetables. In January 2005, it was incorporated into Karatsu City along with Hamatama Town, Ochi Town, Hizen Town, Chinzei Town, Yobuko Town, and Kitahata Village in Higashi Matsuura County. 61.15 km2 . 5,772 people (2003). 佐賀県中部，東松浦郡の旧町。唐津線が通じる。中心集落は唐津炭田の炭鉱町として発達したが，石炭産業の衰退とともに軽工業を誘致。ミカン，米，茶，高冷地野菜を産する。2005年１月東松浦郡浜玉町，相知町，肥前町，鎮西町，呼子町，北波多村と唐津市へ編入。61.15km2。5772人（2003）。
