Its official name is Cholula de Rivadabia. It is a city in the southwest of Puebla State, central Mexico. It is located about 100 km southeast of Mexico City, in the southeastern part of the Mexican Plateau, at an altitude of about 2,150 m. It is a place where Indian culture flourished, dating back to the Early Classic Period (100-600) and reaching its peak in the Late Classic Period (900-1200), and is known for its many churches with round towers. Before the Spanish conquest, there were hundreds of temples around a huge pyramid (54 m high, 18 ha base area) made of sun-dried bricks, but in 1519, H. Cortes destroyed the city while marching to Tenochtitlan (present-day Mexico City), the capital of the Aztec Empire, and it is said that he built the current churches on top of each temple. The Quetzalcoatl Temple on top of the pyramid was also destroyed at that time, and the Los Remedios Basilica was built in its place. Currently, the city is a religious and tourist center attracting many pilgrims and tourists, and is also the commercial and industrial center for the surrounding agricultural regions, distributing and processing grains, maguey (a type of agave, from whose juice the alcohol known as pulque is brewed), fruits, vegetables, and livestock. The city has a brewery, flour mill, and textile factory. Population 26,748 (1980).
