This temple is located in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, China. It is said that during the Yuanhe period of the Tang Dynasty (806-820), the extraordinary monk Hanshan built a hermitage here, and later, Sekitou Kisen, the successor of Seigen Gyōshi, built a temple and named it Hanshan Temple. Hanshan was a legendary Buddhist monk and poet who appeared at the Guoqing Temple on Mount Tiantai and was known as Jittoku. Although the temple is named after Hanshan, there are almost no traces of his actions within the temple, and the history of Sekitou's founding is unknown. The Tang Dynasty poet Zhang Ji wrote the following poem, "The moon falls, the crows cry, the sky is filled with frost. The fishing fires on the maple river make me sleepy. Outside the city of Gusu, the Cold Mountain Temple. The passenger ship arrives at midnight. " It was formerly called Myori Fuming Tower Temple, and was renamed Fumon Zen Temple during the Song Dynasty's Jiayū period (1056-63). During the Ming Dynasty, it was a famous temple with seven halls. [Michio Sato] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
