Alaska pollack (Alaska pollack)

Japanese: スケトウダラ(鯳) - スケトウダラ（英語表記）Alaska pollack

Also called Alaska pollock (Palaeocod), mentai (a Japanese translation of the Korean word mentaiko), or mintai. A marine fish of the family Codidae (illustration) in the order Gadiformes. In Honshu, it is found north of Yamaguchi Prefecture on the Sea of Japan side, and north of Miyagi Prefecture on the Pacific side. It is common in the Sea of Okhotsk and Bering Sea, and extends to the west coast of North America. It is also found on the Sea of Japan side of the Korean Peninsula. Compared to the closely related Pacific cod, its body is slimmer and slightly elongated. The lower jaw protrudes further than the upper jaw, and the barbels on the lower jaw are very short. There are dark brown irregular markings from the back to the sides of the body, and the belly is white.

スケソウ(スケソウダラ)，メンタイ(朝鮮語の明太の日本語化したもの)，ミンタイともいう。タラ目タラ科の海産魚（イラスト）。本州では日本海側は山口県以北，太平洋側は宮城県以北に分布。オホーツク海，ベーリング海に多く，北アメリカ西海岸に及ぶ。朝鮮半島の日本海側にも多い。近縁のマダラに比べ体は細く，やや延長している。下あごは上あごより突出し，下あごのひげはごく短い。体の背面から側面にかけて濃褐色不定形の斑紋があり，腹面は白い。
