Itako are known for summoning Hotoke (dead spirits), and the Jizobon festivals and Jizo-ko festivals in Osorezan on the Shimokita Peninsula and Kawakura in Kanagi Town on the Tsugaru Peninsula are known as Itakomachi, and attract many Itako. In spring and autumn, they also hold Oshirasama, a deity enshrined in the village's old family line, in both hands and dance while reciting Oshirasama rites....

In the Tohoku region, blind shrine maidens called Itako, Ichiko, Waka, etc. performed the duties of spirit possession, incantations, fortune telling, and reciting rituals for the health of the household by turning Oshira dolls. Spirit possession was a shaman function that summoned the dead by being possessed by a god, making them speak their grudges, and calming the raging spirits. Traces of this can still be seen today at Osorezan in Shimokita and at the Itakomachi festival of Jizobon in Kawakura, Tsugaru.
