Bonifatius (English spelling)

A Christian saint. Born to an aristocratic family in Wessex, England, his real name was Winfrith Boniface. As an adult, he became a Benedictine monk. He first went to Friesland (the Netherlands, northern Germany) where he devoted himself to evangelism, but then went into the interior of Germany, including Thuringia, Saxony, and Hesse, where he was active in evangelizing the Germanic people. In the end, however, he was attacked by violent people who refused to abandon their pagan religion and was martyred. He was buried in the monastery of Fulda, and is revered as the "Apostle of the German Evangelization." His feast day is June 5th. The records he made of the myths and customs of the Germanic people during his evangelization are now valuable resources.
