A Bantu-speaking ethnic group living in the southwest of Lake Victoria in Tanzania. They are culturally and linguistically very close to the neighboring Nyamwezi people, and together they have an estimated population of over 5 million, making them the largest in Tanzania. Their livelihood is a mixed economy of agriculture, mainly corn and millet cultivation, and cattle breeding. Cotton has been introduced as a cash crop. The chiefdoms, which had been separate for more than two centuries, formed a federation in 1946, which later became an administrative division of the Tanzanian government. They practice polygamy, and descent, inheritance, and succession are generally patrilineal, but the chief's position is passed down to the son of the sister. Bridewealth also has important implications for inheritance. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
