A city in the southwest of Kanagawa Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1940. Facing Sagami Bay, it is made up of the alluvial lowlands of the Sakawa River and the hills and mountains that connect to the Hakone outer rim. The city center was the castle town of the Hojo clan from the end of the 15th century onwards, and in the early modern period, the Okubo clan of the Odawara domain, and was the center of southern Kanto. It also prospered as a post town on the Tokaido road, with Mount Hakone to the west. It is served by the Tokaido main line, the Shinkansen, the Odakyu Electric Railway, the Hakone Tozan Railway, and the Izu Hakone Railway, and is a thriving city with thriving photographic film and electrical equipment industries. It is the central city of the western part of the prefecture and the gateway to Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park. It produces mandarin oranges and pears, and also engages in fishing. Its specialties are kamaboko, pickled plums, and Hakone crafts. It has an area of 113.81 ^km2 . It has a population of 198,327 (2010).

神奈川県南西部の市。1940年市制。相模湾に面し，酒匂(さかわ)川の沖積低地と箱根外輪山に連なる丘陵，山地よりなる。中心市街は15世紀末以降北条氏，近世には小田原藩大久保氏の城下町として南関東の中心となり，また箱根山を西にひかえた東海道の宿場町としても繁栄した。東海道本線・新幹線，小田急電鉄，箱根登山鉄道，伊豆箱根鉄道が通じ，写真フィルム・電気機器工業などが盛んで，県西部の中心都市，富士箱根伊豆国立公園の玄関口となっている。ミカン，ナシを産し，漁業も行う。かまぼこ，梅干，箱根細工を特産。113.81km²。19万8327人（2010）。
