Cladopus japonicus (river moss grass)

Cladopus japonicus (river moss grass)
A perennial plant of the Podostemaceae family that grows in flowing water. The roots branch 2-3 times, the stems are flat, and they grow on rocks in fast-flowing rivers, so at first glance they look like moss. The stems are covered with 5mm needle-like leaves in bunches. Around September, small stalks of 2-3mm grow from the leafy parts, and flowers bloom at the top of them. The flower has one stamen and one pistil, and the stamens have linear perianth scales. The upper half of the ovary is pale pink. The capsule is spherical with a short stalk, and the upper half splits open at an angle. Since it was discovered in the Kutomi River in Kagoshima Prefecture in 1927, it has only been found in fast-flowing rivers in southern Kyushu, such as the Kawauchi River and the Anraku River.
