Rack railway

Japanese: 歯車式鉄道 - はぐるましきてつどう（英語表記）rack railway

A general term for railways that use the meshing of on-board gears with toothed rails laid on the ground to propel and brake the vehicle. It is used mainly on mountain railways with steep inclines. The vehicle (mainly the powered vehicle) is equipped with a gear with a horizontal or vertical axis perpendicular to the track, while a rail with teeth (toothed rail) that meshes with the gear is laid on the track side. When driving the vehicle, power is transmitted from the electric motor to this gear via another gear, and this gear meshes with the toothed rail to move forward.

車両の推進，制動などに，車上の歯車と地上に敷設した歯形レールのかみ合いを利用した鉄道の総称。もっぱら急こう配の登山鉄道に利用される。車両(主として動力車)には，軌道に直角で水平または垂直方向の軸を有する歯車を設け，一方，軌道側には，その歯車にかみ合うような歯形のついたレール(歯形レール)を敷設しておく。車両の駆動の際には電動機から別の歯車を介してこの歯車に動力を伝え，この歯車と歯形レールとがかみ合って前進する。
