1861‐1914 He was an intellectual who contributed to the Arab literary revival, and is also famous as a historical novelist. Born in Beirut, he aspired to be a doctor, but after a disagreement with a professor at the American University of Beirut, he moved to Egypt. He turned to journalism and literature, and published the magazine al-Hilāl (1892), which published an energetic number of articles and stories on languages and history. He was an erudite writer, and wrote a number of series of historical novels related to Islamic history.
