Jurji Zaydān

1861‐1914
He was an intellectual who contributed to the Arab literary revival, and is also famous as a historical novelist. Born in Beirut, he aspired to be a doctor, but after a disagreement with a professor at the American University of Beirut, he moved to Egypt. He turned to journalism and literature, and published the magazine al-Hilāl (1892), which published an energetic number of articles and stories on languages and history. He was an erudite writer, and wrote a number of series of historical novels related to Islamic history. His most famous works include History of Islamic Civilization (5 volumes, 1902) and History of Arab Literature (4 volumes, 1911).

アラブ文芸復興に寄与した知識人で，歴史小説家としても名高い。ベイルートに生まれ，医学を志したが，ベイルートのアメリカ大学の教授と不和になり，エジプトに移った。ジャーナリズムと文学に転じ，雑誌《ヒラールal‐Hilāl》を出版し(1892)，言語･歴史関係の記事および物語を精力的に掲載した。博学でイスラム史にまつわる歴史小説をシリーズで多数書いている。とりわけ有名な著書としては，《イスラム文明史》5巻(1902)，《アラブ文学史》4巻(1911)がある。
