An organization founded in London in 1795 with the goal of bringing the gospel to non-Christians overseas. Its main sponsor was the Congregational Church. At the time, J. Cook's Pacific explorations had aroused strong interest in the Christian community in Britain, and the Society's first mission site was the Pacific region. In 1796, the mission ship Duff set sail with missionaries bound for Tahiti, Tongatapu, and the Marquesas Islands. The first missionaries landed in Tahiti the following year, and it became a base for Christian evangelism throughout the South Pacific.

海外の非キリスト教徒に福音をもたらすことを目的に，1795年ロンドンで設立された組織。おもな後援者は会衆派教会であった。当時のJ.クックの太平洋探検はイギリスのキリスト教界に強い興味を引き起こし，協会が最初に選んだ宣教の場所は太平洋地域であった。96年伝道船ダフ号はタヒチ島，トンガタプ島，マルキーズ諸島に向かう宣教師達を乗せて出航した。翌年にはタヒチに最初の宣教師が上陸し，以後南太平洋全域へのキリスト教布教の基地となった。
