An organization founded in London in 1795 with the goal of bringing the gospel to non-Christians overseas. Its main sponsor was the Congregational Church. At the time, J. Cook's Pacific explorations had aroused strong interest in the Christian community in Britain, and the Society's first mission site was the Pacific region. In 1796, the mission ship Duff set sail with missionaries bound for Tahiti, Tongatapu, and the Marquesas Islands. The first missionaries landed in Tahiti the following year, and it became a base for Christian evangelism throughout the South Pacific. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
