The story centers on Sir Lancelot, one of the Knights of the Round Table who served King Arthur. The first work was probably the long verse work Lancelot, or the Knight of the Cart, written in the 1170s by Chrétien de Troyes in France, which tells the story of Lancelot enduring the humiliation of rescuing Queen Arthur, who had been kidnapped by the King of the Dead. As for works that deal with Lancelot's birth and early life, the French prose work The Life of Lancelot (also known as Lancelot of the Lake) was written in the 1220s, based on a French work that is no longer extant (though its existence and content are known from the German translation Lanzelette from the late 12th century).

アーサー王に仕える円卓の騎士の一人ランスロ卿を主人公とする物語。最初に成立したのは，おそらくフランスでクレティアン･ド･トロアが1170年代に書いた韻文長編《ランスロまたは荷車の騎士》で，他界の王にさらわれたアーサー王妃をランスロが屈辱に耐えて救出する挿話を物語るものであった。ランスロを誕生･生い立ちから扱った作品としては，今日伝存しないフランス語作品(しかしその存在と内容は12世紀末のドイツ語訳《ランツェレット》によって知られる)を種本の一つとして1220年代にフランス語散文作品《ランスロ本伝》(別名《湖水のランスロ》)が書かれた。
