Guillaume de Champeaux

Around 1070-1121
An early scholastic theologian. He studied under Anselm of Laon and Roscellinus, and taught at the school of Notre Dame de Paris after 1095. His name is recorded in the history of the medieval universal debate, but because he represented the extreme idealism of the early 12th century, he was thoroughly attacked by his student Abelard. That is, he initially held the theory that all individual things belonging to the same species are substantially identical, but in response to criticism that this could be taken to mean pantheism, he responded that identity does not mean essence, but rather the absence of difference, and he advocated the so-called doctrine of indifference.

初期スコラの神学者。ランのアンセルムスとロスケリヌスに学び，1095年以後ノートル･ダム聖堂付属学校で教えた。彼の名は中世の普遍論争史に記録されるが，それは12世紀初期の極端な実念論を代表したため，弟子のアベラールによって徹底的に攻撃されたことである。すなわち，最初は同じ種に属する個物はみな実体的に同一であるとの説をとっていたが，それはつきつめれば汎神論になるのではないかとの批判を受けて，同一とは本質のことではなく差別がないという意味だとこたえ，いわゆる無差別説を主張した。
