Dutch architect. Born in Amsterdam and died in The Hague. He studied architecture in Zurich from 1875 to 1878. After traveling through Germany, Austria, and Italy, he settled in Amsterdam in 1882. He built the Stock Exchange there (1898-1903), and attracted attention as a pioneer of modern architecture with his materialistic structure that broke away from historicism. His major works include the Dutch House in London (1914-16), the urban plan for the southern part of Amsterdam (1915), and the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague (1931-35). These works, as well as theoretical works such as "Thoughts on Architectural Style" (1905) and "Principles and Development of Architecture" (1908), had a major influence on the De Stijl movement.
