A Japanese-Chinese dictionary in 12 volumes. Compiled by Shoju. After a draft was created in 892 (Kanpei 4), further additions were made and the dictionary was revised and enlarged to the current 12 volumes during the Shotai period (898-901). It lists kanji by radical, provides pronunciation notes, gives meanings in classical Chinese, and gives Japanese readings in Man'yōgana. It is the oldest Japanese-Chinese dictionary in Japan. The radicals are arranged differently from the current dictionary, in the same order as in Chinese texts, such as the Heaven section, the Day section, and the Moon section. It lists about 21,000 characters, of which over 16,300 are classified by radicals, and in some parts the same radicals are divided by the four tones. There are about 3,700 Japanese readings, and about 70 harmony notes. It contains many words that convey vestiges of the language of the Nara period, and even after the collapse of the special kana spelling of ancient times, this book still retains the Ko class A and B.
