Historian of science. Born in Hiroshima Prefecture. Dropped out of Sendai Second High School due to eye disease, then passed the secondary school teacher examination by self-study and obtained a license to teach mathematics. He began researching the history of Japanese mathematics around 1905 (Meiji 38), and in 1908 was appointed to the Imperial Academy. In 1911 he entered the Department of Philosophy at Tokyo Imperial University, and was enrolled in graduate school until 1919 (Taisho 8). He received his doctorate in science in 1949 (Showa 24). He researched Japanese mathematics and the history of mathematical relations between Japan and China, mainly with Seki Takakazu, and his 1923 paper "Japanese Mathematics Seen from a Cultural History Perspective" was the first paper in the world to view the history of science as cultural history, and had a major impact on research into the history of science.
