Yoshio Mikami

Historian of science. Born in Hiroshima Prefecture. Dropped out of Sendai Second High School due to eye disease, then passed the secondary school teacher examination by self-study and obtained a license to teach mathematics. He began researching the history of Japanese mathematics around 1905 (Meiji 38), and in 1908 was appointed to the Imperial Academy. In 1911 he entered the Department of Philosophy at Tokyo Imperial University, and was enrolled in graduate school until 1919 (Taisho 8). He received his doctorate in science in 1949 (Showa 24). He researched Japanese mathematics and the history of mathematical relations between Japan and China, mainly with Seki Takakazu, and his 1923 paper "Japanese Mathematics Seen from a Cultural History Perspective" was the first paper in the world to view the history of science as cultural history, and had a major impact on research into the history of science.

科学史家。広島県生まれ。眼疾のため仙台の第二高等学校を退学、独学で中等教員検定に合格、数学科免許を得た。1905年（明治38）ごろから和算史の研究を始め、1908年帝国学士院嘱託。1911年東京帝国大学哲学科選科入学、1919年（大正8）まで大学院に在籍。1949年（昭和24）理学博士。関孝和(たかかず)を中心に日本の数学、日本と中国の数学関係史などを研究、1923年の論文「文化史より見たる日本の数学」は科学史を文化史としてみた世界初の論文であり、科学史研究に大きな影響を与えた。
