Dojima Rice Market

Japanese:
Dojima Rice Market

The center of rice trading in early modern Osaka. The rice market, which was originally located in front of Yodoya Gate, moved to Dojima (Kita-ku, Osaka City) in 1697 (Genroku 10), and rice brokers, money exchanges, and storehouses of various feudal domains gathered there, increasing the amount of trading, and the rice price here began to have a major impact on the entire country. After choai rice trading (a type of futures trading conducted on a ledger) was officially permitted in 1730 (Kyoho 15), shomai (spot) trading also continued, but in reality it was the buying and selling of rice stamps, and excessive stamps were often issued in anticipation of rice that had not yet arrived from the various feudal domains, causing disputes known as empty rice stamps or empty rice trading incidents. Towards the end of the Edo period, rice prices were fluctuating greatly, so the four-month accounting rice trade was changed to one-month kokudate rice trade, but this was abolished in 1869 (Meiji 2) and only regular rice trade remained.
