Sugawa

Japanese:
Sugawa

A river that flows through the southeastern part of Yamagata Prefecture. It is one of the tributaries of the Mogami River. It originates from Mt. Funahiki in the Ou Mountains, flows north through the Yamagata Basin, and joins the Mogami River at Terazu in the southwest of Tendo City. It is 45 kilometers long and has a drainage area of 682 square kilometers. Along the way, it joins the Zao River and the Sugawa River, which originate from the Zao Volcano, but these tributaries are highly acidic rivers, and the name Sugawa comes from the acidic water quality. As a result, it joins the Mamigasaki River and Tachiya River downstream, but it is difficult to use it for irrigation. During the Edo period, river ports such as Funamachi (Yamagata City) and Terazu (Tendo City) flourished along the coast.
