Carpentier, Alejo
Born: December 26, 1904, Havana
[Died] April 25, 1980. A novelist from Paris, Cuba. He showed a strong interest in literature and music from his childhood, and is also known as the author of La música en Cuba (1946, published in Mexico). He went into exile in Paris for political reasons, and was deeply involved in the Surrealist movement. He lived in exile until the Cuban Revolution in 1959. His work Ecué-Yamba-O (33) is considered to be the origin of black fiction. He later published El reino de este mundo (The Kingdom of This World) (49), which deals with the Haitian revolution, Los pasos perdidos (The Lost Footprints) (53), a story about the search for the origins of art, El siglo de las luces (The Century of Light) (63), set in the Caribbean during the French Revolution, and Recurso del método (The Restatement of the Method) (75), a political novel with an enlightened despot as the protagonist, and was recognized as a representative of "magical realism." He also published the short stories El acoso (The Pursuit) (56), Guerra del timempo (The Battle against Time) (58), and El concierto barroco (The Baroque Concerto) (75).
