At each node, two strong roots about 4 cm long are attached to the rocks. The leaves are linear, alternate in two rows, 1-1.5 meters long and 3-5 mm wide, with an open leaf sheath 18-26 cm long at the base, rounded at the tip, slightly serrated at the upper edge, and five parallel veins. It flowers in March-April on a spadix. Dioecious. The spadix is ​​fused to the bracts and enclosed in an open leaf sheath with a thin blade at the end, is broadly linear and about 4 cm long. The male inflorescence is arranged in two rows of male flowers consisting of only sessile stamens divided into two locules. The female inflorescence consists of one pseudoaneury and one pistil, arranged in two rows. The fruit is yellowish brown, oblate-cordate-shaped, about 4 mm long, and contains one spherical seed. The fruit turns black when ripe. It is distributed in Honshu, from Inubosaki in Chiba Prefecture and north of Oga Peninsula in Akita Prefecture, Hokkaido, the Kuril Islands, Sakhalin, northern China, and the Korean Peninsula.
